An extensive study of community recreational and social sites offering programs for developmentally disabled clients was conducted by in 2006. It was found that a few health clubs and the YMCA offered some fitness activities. Younger disabled persons participated in Special Olympics. Unavailable was a community site with a comprehensive program including games, art/crafts, music, social interaction, and language enrichment at the appropriate level for adults with developmental disabilities.
A summer pilot project program was conducted in 2007. A local church basement was rented. Most materials were donated. Clients were assessed a small fee to cover rental costs. Agency board or corporate members served as volunteer staff. Everyone involved saw the need to provide an on-going program.
Quilceda Community Services opened a recreation program called Willow Place in a small rented building in Marysville. Started in September 2008, the program began with 4 older disabled persons. Each year the number of registered participants grew. Knowing a larger site was needed for the expansion of additional clients, the board submitted a $100,000.00 acquisition Community Development Block Grant in late 2010, was approved for recommendation, and purchased a building on August 1, 2011.
The structure, built in 1967 is located at 9610 - 48 Drive NE, Marysville. This 2500 square foot building is situated on 1.25 acres in a quiet, residential neighborhood. The entire property is flat, fully fenced. The agency completed the process for a Conditional Use Permit, completed the required remodeling, and moved to the new corporate offices in December, 2011.
Today...demand for this program continues to grow and our current facility is bursting at the seams. The Agency is currently researching funding sources and private donations for an expansion project slated to break ground once funding is in place. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please contact us. We would love to show you our plans.
